Public Relations Specialist 3 (Associate Editor, Internal Communications)
The Office of Strategic Communications seeks a Public Relations Specialist to serve as the associate editor for internal communications in News and Media Relations, the University's central news department. This position reports to the manager of internal communications and has the primary responsibility for guiding the daily production and distribution of the University's premiere internal email news publication, Penn State Today, which is sent to 130,000 students, faculty, and staff at all campus locations. The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding the tone and voice of Penn State Today, assisting in the execution of a strategic internal communications plan that engages, inspires, and informs faculty, staff, and students. Duties will include: write, edit, and rewrite content for Penn State Today and for Penn State's other major communications platforms; work directly with communications professionals across Penn State, including academic colleges, departments and units, and at the University's 24 campus locations to highlight content that is of importance to internal constituencies; identify campus/college content that aligns with Penn State's strategic priorities and has potential for broad public consumption on traditional and social platforms as well as proactive media placement. As a member of the University's News and Media Relations team, the successful candidate will be called upon to lead major University communications initiatives critical to administrative and strategic priorities and to cover other University news, as appropriate. This individual also will assist in responding to issues of concern to the media and the public. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Reporting or copy-editing background is highly preferred; experience as a photographer is a plus, but not required. Requires exceptional news judgment, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, the ability to prioritize concurrent tasks, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience with AP style and newswriting required. Familiarity with Photoshop and InDesign is desirable.
